If You’re Joining an Ongoing Class Here’s What to Expect for your First Water Babies Lesson

Water Babies runs a continuous program, meaning we offer lessons year-round. Babies and toddlers can start at any time as long as there’s available space. This means that your first lesson might not be in a brand-new class – your little one could join a group that has already had lessons. But don’t worry! Every child learns at their own pace, and there’s plenty of support to help you and your little swimmer settle in. Here’s everything you need to know about your first Water Babies lesson and how to make the most of it!

Tips for Your First Lesson

  • No Need to Compare

Every child is unique and progresses at their own pace! While some swimmers may advance quicker or have more experience in the water, your little one will reach their milestones in their own time.

  • Other Parents Understand

Everyone in the class had their first lesson once – so there’s no judgment here. They understand what you’re experiencing and may even offer support or share helpful tips along the way.

  • Teachers Are Here to Help

Water Babies teachers are specially trained to adapt activities to suit different skill levels, ensuring every swimmer receives the support they need.

  • Watch & Learn

While teachers may not always be able to demonstrate every skill, observing other parents and their children can be a great way to understand the activity.

  • Ask Questions

Your teacher is there to support you, never hesitate to ask for guidance or clarification. We’re here to help every step of the way!

  • Follow your Child’s Lead

Some children may take to the water right away, while others may need a little more time. Both are completely okay! Be patient, continue encouraging them, and most importantly, have fun together.

What Happens in a Water Babies Lesson?

Let’s walk you through what a typical Water Babies lesson looks like!

Once you and your little one are changed and ready, your teacher will let you know when it’s time to enter the pool. Each lesson is designed to build water confidence, safety awareness and lay the foundations for swimming strokes and core aquatic skills.

  • Safe Entry & Warm Up

We start every lesson with safe entry, followed by a warm-up. It includes lovely songs and simple movements to help your child feel comfortable in the water in a fun and familiar way.

  • Learning Through Play & Repetition

During your 30-minute class, your teacher will guide you through different skills working on your little ones’ core aquatic skills, swimming strokes and water safety skills. Lessons are designed to be engaging, using songs, toys, and repetition to reinforce learning while ensuring our swimmers have lots of fun.

  • Safe Exit & Cool Down

To wrap up the class, we finish with a nice cool down. Finally, we practice our safe exit, then it’s time to say goodbye - until next week.

Your first Water Babies lesson is the beginning of an exciting journey! Every child learns at their own pace, and with the support of your teacher, fellow parents and your local office, your little one will be confident and comfortable in the water in no time. Remember, there’s no rush – take it one step at a time!
